In both cases, reliability is far better than it was in decades past, fuel efficiency has increased, and problems like smoky exhaust and ear-splitting sound levels are ancient history.
But that doesn't mean your new outboard is infallible. In fact, there are a few common problems with modern outboard motors that crop up again and again. These will leave some of us sitting at the dock, wishing instead of fishing.
For those of us who know the quick fix solution, however, these problems are easy to take care of. Today's outboard motors are far more reliable and fuel efficient than those of yester-year, but you'll still want to know how to fix these common problems—and fix 'em fast.

So, what should you do when your outboard engine is puttering instead of purring?
Some problems can even be solved with the twist of only two fingers. Simply twist it open and monitor your engine for improvement. Wasps, spiders, and other critters are well-known for clogging these fittings up, and that can significantly affect engine performance.
If you do find a clogged vent, simply clean it out with a pair of tweezers. Also, check all your fuel hoses from the tank to the engine. A kinked or pinched hose can cause significant performance problems in an outboard engine, especially at higher RPMs, while pinholes in fuel lines can introduce air to the fuel, as well as create a safety problem.
A haven for corrosion, the ports inside these connectors often clog up with nasty bits of corroded, gas-soaked metal powder that can impede fuel flow. The ball bearings and check valves inside some of these connectors can also fail. The purpose of these filters is not only to filter particulate matter out of fuel before it reaches your outboard, but also to separate any water that may be present in your fuel. These filters sometimes become clogged or filled with water, causing an engine to run poorly.
The presence of water is a tipoff that you may have a bad load of fuel in your boat. You may want to have it professionally filtered, as the presence of too much water can cause engine problems. Luckily most are a relatively inexpensive purchase. Some portable outboard fuel tanks have inline primary fuel filters installed in the fuel supply line, too. Last, always use fresh fuel. And, always add fuel stabilizers designed to combat problems associated with ethanol fuel at every fill up.
No excuses. Many outboards—especially newer models—have a slew of onboard fuel filters that can become clogged and detrimentally affect performance.
On the simplest of outboard engines these are easily replaceable, often installed inline between the fuel inlet and the carburetor. Some smaller or older outboards may not even have one.I ound dirt down in mine and it fixed it.
The tell-tale is not clogged. Remove clean or replace, it is cheap. Some of Louisiana's best inshore fishing - and I mean the absolute best - is found around aquatic grass that is usually thickest near river water. When I run it in a gallon barrel I have to rev it up to get it to pee at idle.

The water coming out of the front was heated so it definitely was used to cool the motor. Start at idle RPM and watch. The whole check should be minutes. This outboard is every boater's dream. I agree that you should replace the entire water pump this first time around. I read on a forum that it the engine might need to warm up before water would come out, so i ran it for 5 minutes on idle. Put muffs back on but still no water and only about rpm.

One thing I do not miss about Honda, their damn teltale system. I did some tweaking of the throttle stop screw on the bottom carb to raise the idle a bit initially as it kept stalling. I would let it sit for a while and it would troll great for 5 minutes then same thing all over again. On a cold day, you may even see steam coming off the pee stream. The first is that the water stream fitting -- the outlet hole for an outboard motor's cooling system -- is clogged.Outboard no water after impeller change?
Insects love to crawl up into it, but once there, they may become trapped and die. Once the cooling system is full of water, with no outlet, the impeller just agitates it, without cooling the motor. The second is that the water inlets are clogged; no water is getting to the pump, so it isn't pumping.
Finally, the impeller may be damaged or worn beyond repair, requiring its replacement. Locate the water stream fitting, found at the rear of the motor, at the bottom of the motor cover. Clear the fitting out out by poking a thin piece of wire into it and pulling any debris or insects out. Check the cooling water intakes and clean them out the same way, if they are clogged.
Troubleshooting a Rough-Running Outboard
Connect a garden hose to your motor's flushing point or, if you don't have a single point flushing system, connect the hose to a device called a flushing attachment, and set the flushing attachment over the raw water intakes. Turn the water on, start your motor and warm it to its usual operating temperature. Look at the lower-rear part of your outboard's top cover while it is in operation.
Inspect the water stream fitting once more. If you see a stream of water pouring forth, the impeller is working. Shut the motor down immediately if you do not see a stream of water coming from the lower rear part of your motor's top cover; the problem lies with the impeller, not clogged intakes or a clogged water stream fitting. Remove the nuts and bolts that connect the lower unit to the rest of the motor with a thin-wall socket.
Pull the lower unit away from the motor carefully, lest you bend the driveshaft or shift shaft. The water pump is located on top of the lower unit. Remove the bolts holding the water pump in place, using an adjustable wrench. Pull the pump cover up and over the top of the driveshaft. Grab the impeller and pull it off the driveshaft just as you did the pump cover.
Insert the new impeller -- from the pump replacement kit -- into the liner of the pump cover. Insert a new gasket in the groove on the underside of the water pump cover and apply a bead of gasket sealer to the gasket. Slide the pump cover and impeller back down the driveshaft and onto the pump's face plate on the lower unit.
